Currently in Portland — September 22, 2023: Warm and sunny before the first weekend of fall

Plus, announcing a very special Science Friday book club!

The weather, currently.

Friday is warm and sunny, before a cool, damp weekend.

It’s as if the weather can read the calendar because summer is having a last hurrah on Friday, before fall makes an emphatic appearance on Saturday.

Friday will be a sunny day with high temps reaching 80 degrees. Get out there and enjoy it if that’s your thing, because this weekend is cooling way down, and there’s a really good chance of rain.

Between Friday and Saturday the high temp will plummet 10+ degrees, giving us highs in the upper 60s. Sunday may be even cooler, and the chance of rain will steadily increase all weekend, with the current highest rainfall predictions landing Sunday night into Monday morning. But you know how Portland rain works—it’s got a mind of its own. So plan for plenty of layers and keep that raincoat (or the dreaded umbrella) handy if you’re heading out!

What you need to know, currently.

It’s my extreme thrill to announce a partnership with Science Friday’s book club series: During the month of October, Science Friday will be doing a series of events focusing on my book, The Future Earth.

You can RSVP for the book club discussion livestream here, and enter to win your free copy of the book — which will arrive just in time that you don’t miss a thing!

If you haven’t read The Future Earth yet, there’s an excerpt here, the book also features a series of thought experiments and small group exercises at the back, so it’s going to be really exciting to do all this with the huge audience that Science Friday will bring.

I wrote this book because I truly believe a better world that works for everyone is possible, and I wanted to imagine what it would be like to live in that world. If you’re in need of a bit of realistic hope-grounded-in-justice right now, I wrote this book just for you.
